Remix Competition - 1998 - Remix Number 20

Orbital Track The Box and The Girl With The Sun In Her Head
Remixer Torley and Merrit Wong (aka T&M Wong)
Remix Name TdOnUm vIt@E [aka The Box (Torley and Merritt Wong's recreation)]

Why did you choose this track(s) to remix ?

Erm... well, we reckon that it's because The Box has such a catchy melody. Hee hee... that, and the fact that we watched its music video an awful lot of times on MTV's AMP while eating chocolate Pop Tarts. That always brings back a lot of memories. The Girl With The Sun In Her Head pieces fell into place when we decided to use similar LFO pulses and the jungle patterns -- well, we later kind of demolished those, but that's a whole other story, really. Under the table, boy! Um... That's about all there is to it.

Why did you enter this competition ?

We consider it a prestigious honor to have our music actually listened to by Orbital and their track man. Thanx so much, Mr. Steve A. Price, for making all of this possible! Well... we'd be even more honored to hear what Orbital themselves have to say regarding our work... brothers and brothers... hint hint... ;-D I (Torley) usually work solo, but for this project, Merritt decided that it would be in the pure spirit of Orbital if he tagged along for the ride and helped me figure out some of the structural problems I was having with my remix.

Who are your musical influences ?

Our baker's dozen: -Aphex Twin -J.S. Bach -Claude Debussy -Goldie -Jewel -Mike Oldfield -Mu-Ziq -Orbital -Robert Miles -Ryuichi Sakamoto -Vangelis -Yanni -ourselves (each other)

Musical equipment/software used ?

Various Alesis and Roland synthesizers/samplers -Power Macintosh G3 with el cheapo stuff like Opcode Musicshop, but a bunch o' custom software too, and some IRCAM stuff like RDJ... hee hee...

If you had to listen to one Orbital track every day...what would it be and why ?

It would definitely be Lush 3-1. The first intelligent dance music I (Torley) ever listened to. Quite minimalistic and simple, but that makes it all the more essential. We loved the video too -- it completely threw the generic structure of electronic music videos in the rubbish bin, and... oh, it was quite calming as well... ahhh...
