Remix Competition - 1999 - Remix Number 31

Orbital Track Crash And Carry (with elements reminiscent of Planet Of The Shapes).
Remixer Whiggy
Remix Name Crash And Carry (The Whiggy Riot Remix)

Why did you choose this track(s) to remix ?

Well, it goes back to a few years ago when I was poking around the old Orbital homepage. I stumbled across some song clips, and some of them where actually loops of isolated instruments from Crash And Carry. I stored them away and pretty much forgot about them. Luckily, I remembered them a couple of months ago and managed to find them. Then it was just a matter of sticking them in ReBirth and playing around with them until I had something I liked, and the rest of the mix just sort of grew out of that.

Who are your musical influences ?

I suppose I could say everything I've ever heard, like the classical and jazz my parents listened to as I grew up, or even the normal, noises and sounds around me have been an influence. But that's true of most artists and probably not exactly the kind of answer your looking for. So here's a list of some the groups and people who've left a lasting impression, musically speaking.

Orbital (obviously), The KLF, Kraftwerk, The Art Of Noise, The Orb, Fluke, 808 State, The Shamen, Depeche Mode, Enigma, Antiloop, Moby, Underworld, Opus III, The Pet Shop Boys, Front 242, The Future Sound Of London, Erasure, Cygnus X, Eat Static, Meat Beat Manifesto, Juno Reactor, Eon, BT, C.J. Bolland, Jesus Jones, Banco De Gaia, Man With No Name, Astral Projection, The Prodigy, Madonna, Utah Saints, Dead Can Dance, They Might Be Giants, Enya, Weird Al ;), Jean-Michel Jarre, Bill Leeb and Rhys Fulber (in all their incarnations), John & Sasha Digweed, Paul Oakenfold, Vangelis, John Williams, Danny Elfman, James Horner, Jerry Goldsmith, Ennio Morricone, Christophe Beck, Alan Silvestri, Christopher Franke, Graeme Revell, Trevor Jones, Michael Kamen, Angelo Badalamenti, Eric Serra, Elliot Goldenthal, Brad Fiedel, Prokofiev, Holst, Debussy, Mozart... Well you get the idea. Also a lot of very talented "undiscovered" artists on the net.

Musical equipment/software used ?

Hardware: Akai S612 Sampler (A prehistoric beast) Yamaha DR100 Reverb Machine Yamaha Synth (Don't ask, it's embarrassing. It sends midi data, that's all it needs to do.) PC running Win98 with a Celeron 400 & 64megs of RAM

Software: Cool Edit Pro 1.1 (For mixing and additional effects) Cubase Score VST 3.5 (For sending midi data to my sampler) ReBirth 2.01 (For sequencing and effects) ReBirth Modpacker (For sticking loops in ReBirth) ReMaker 1.3 (For converting .rbs files to .mid)

Favourite Orbital Track

Ugh, I hate having to pick just one. But I suppose if I was forced to, I'd pick Out There Somewhere (which, of course, is actually two tracks anyway). I love the way it builds (very slowly) to a joyous climax.
