Remix Competition - 1999 - Remix Number 23

Orbital Track Impact
Remixer Smith aka sMiVeRz
Remix Name Impact by me, parts 1 and 2

Why did you choose this track(s) to remix ?

Originally I was going to do Nothing Left. However, what I had done didn't have a beginning or ending - just a middle! Pretty useless really. So I decided to do "Impact", a long-term favourite of mine.

I selected this track because it's catchy. It's lively. You can nod your head to it. With its "cascading chords" using *That* sound, it was the first tune of theirs which really made me smile the first time I heard it.

At first it was just going to be a "part 1" as it was fairly long. So I took some stuff out, made it a little shorter so a part 2 would fit on the end comfortably. Eventually I think I got the balance about right - it captures the main components of "Impact" and I left out some details so it wouldn't be cluttered.

It's not based on any particular -version- of Impact. I sequenced it the way I have because it felt natural to do so. Unlike some more complex Orbital songs, you don't have to "think" what should come next. I found that it "wrote itself", as it were.

Who are your musical influences ?

Orbital, The Beloved, Finitribe, Cabaret Voltaire, Kraftwerk, early Pet Shop Boys (before they went off in the dancey direction) and numerous songs in the 80's/early 90's which I don't know the artists!

Musical equipment/software used ?

Atari STe running Cubase Score 2 (1% used)
PC running Cubase VST 3.6r2 (99% used)
Roland Juno-106 synth
Roland JX-3P synth
Roland/Boss DR-660 drum module
Roland D-110 synth module
Yamaha PSS-780 keyboard
Cranky Studiomaster SessionMix 8-channel desk.

At the end of the day, the mixer was looped back into the computer so that VST was able to record everything. The resulting Wave file was then top-and-tailed using CoolEdit 96 before being written to CD.

Favourite Orbital Track

Hmmm... there are so many tunes, they're all great. For an ultimate favourite though.... I don't know. It would have to be a battle between Chime, Impact, Out There Somewhere and Mock Tudor. Aaaaagh, what about Sad But True? Oh I don't know!!

I give up. Chime is my most favourite.
