New Zero 7 album

Post by Dollydagger »

Anyone heard this or got it? I didn't even know there was one but I saw an advert on TV for it last night.
Apparently it's being hailed as a "return to form" so is it?

They never lost their form IMO.

I bought it yesterday. Its your standard Zero 7 album, the introduction of Jose gonzales is nice, seems slightly more stripped down than previous outings, but I just spent £60 in HMV a minute ago so its gonna take me a while to get into it.

Its not as instantly appealing as "When it Falls" for me, but I really like the laid back vibe of Zero 7 so no doubt it will get played when I am in my summery mood.

I heard 4 tracks on the official website a few days ago and have to admit i was pretty impressed, it does have a folkier vibe about it to the previous stuff.

I'll be buying it.

Thanx guys!
They just played a few brief clips on the advert but the Jose Gonzales one did sound very nice, so I think I'll be buying this too :)

I've only listened through once, and thought it was pants. I've never been a huge Zero 7 fan, and found the first album totally derivative. Didn't bother with the second.

You know when you wonder what the point of an album was? It's like that. No one song is particularly strong or memorable, and the entire middle section is so wishy-washy you wonder how they got it made at all.

I love Jose Gonzalez, but he is wasted here. They don't appear to have done anything with the tracks he appears on, and I was looking forward to an interesting electronic fusion. You hear an acoustic guitar, you know it'll be one of his songs. Track 6 seems to have no Zero 7 on it at all, and even then it's a below average Gonzalez track. I did like 'Crosses', which actually seems to take Gonzalez's sound and do something interesting with it, but it's essentially just a remix.

The album has an odd sound - I think they listened to a few too many Beatles albums while making it. And I'm not a big fan of that 60s sound.

I might even get a refund.

Sorry Dolly!

I thought the first Zero7 CD was a breath of fresh air when it came out but subsequent albums sound like they've had a bit too much clueless record company interference in them and what the label's idea of what a 'chill out' album should sound like. Most disappointing.

Really liking this album now.

Appreciated that it is standard formulaic Zero 7 but why change a winning formula?

I kind of like it, it's a nice mix of 70's funky Wonder-esque soul and late 60's bossa.

The only drawback is that they keep on employing Sia Furler as vocalist, she sound much too like P!nk for comfort :(

I'm still not sure. I think I don't mind it. But I find myself wanting it to be more like the first two albums.

Though I think it's a fine fine album, and the tunes are lovely and catchy, it does lack the magic of their first album, Simple Things. As mentioned before, it opts for a folkier feeling... One thing that kinda gets me is that most of it is Sia... Seems like she has become a 3rd member of Zero 7. Not that it's a bad thing, but I kinda wish they could try collaborating with some other singers...
