Wasn't Santa Claus originally dressed in green before a Coca Cola advert dressed him in red (colour of coke)? :)
i believe Coca Cola had something to do with the image of santa claus, but the original idea did came from holland..
let me show yous:

on the left, we have sinterklaas, on the right, santaclaus..

notice too: the names:
sinterklaas / santaclaus
sint nicolaas / saint nick/ nicholas

and on wikipedia:
He is a variant of a European folk tale based on the historical figure Saint Nicholas, a bishop from present-day Turkey, who supposedly gave presents to the poor, explaining the source of Christmas presents given to children on Christmas Day. The name is derived from the Dutch Sinterklaas, an intermediate figure between the bishop and the Christmas icon. He forms part of the Christmas tradition throughout the English speaking world as well as in Latin America and Japan.

A couple of years ago Perry Como filmed his Christmas Special in Dublin.... in February. Not really that strange when you consider the editing and marketing that goes along with it. What make it kinda funny is one of our top cabaret stars (I know, it's an oxymoron) was booked to appear in this, while still staring in a panto that had been going on since before Christmas. She pulled a sickie on the night of the recording to sing with Perry and got fined ten grand for lying to them. :D

well, instead of santa, we also have sinterklaas, (which the americans STOLE and made santa out of.. seriously). he's another guy with a beard and dressed in red, and gives out presents..
his party is at 5th of december. and he also gives away candy (or his helpers do) like these little cookies in the picture, called pepernoten (peper nuts)

which have nothing to do with either peper or nuts.

good food.
ahhh i see! so its not reindeer poo then :P

How cool am I: I've actually wandered around the ruins of the ancient city (Myra) in Turkey where the real Santa Claus lived, plus the coolest thing of all; I've seen the actual Santa's jawbone! :D (yes kids, Santa's dead...)

Here's some rocktombs in Santa's hometown:

Altough as everyone knows, these days the reincarnation of Santa lives in Lapland Finland, in a place called Korvatunturi (which translates into Ear Mountain, or Ear Fjeld to be more precise)...

Imagine the scene....

kid - Dad someone at school today told me that Santa is not real

Dad - Son well he used to be real

Kid - huh? what do you mean?!

Dad - well he is now dead, laid to rest in his home carved out of the side of a mountain in Turkey.....i know cos i have seen his jawbone!

Yeah I'm ready to swap and you can come here and sniff all the crap that my yard is covered with. ;) Although I'd actually prefer swapping with custard, since she lives in Planet Hot, without the slightest chance of it ever snowing... :P

And yes indeed, I've seen Father Christmas's jawbone, but it wasn't inside one of those tombs (since you weren't allowed to go in) but instead in a museum in Antalya.

Heh, and a discussion with your kid like that would be a pretty smart economical move for the upcoming xmas's (and give him/her something to talk about with his/her psychiatrist in the future)... ;)

From what I have heard the original Santa was a Byzantine petty king called Nicolas. The story goes he was our for a walk and while passing a house he heard some women crying that they were unable to feed themselves as they were unmarried and their father had died (the laws at the time did not allow women to own property and without the protection of a male figure the only way they had to survive was to become ladies of negotiable affection, so until such time as a male relative turned up they were basically on their own).
This Nicolas caricture had some food sent to the women secretly (supposedly having it thrown in through the window) allowing them to survive.
At the time Christianity was the main religion of the area, what with it's creed of charity and good works, so the legend grew from this
Byzantium covered what is modern day Turkey and Anatolia is still a recognised area of there :)
