Gah! That's a contradiction in terms.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not militant about vegetarianism in any way, it's just that the very word means you eat a purely vegetable-based diet, without any 'meat' - which by definition is any animal flesh cooked for food. And I'm more anal about words than I am about eating habits.

I'll stop now! :D

Ah, but is it a contradiction in terms or a tautology?

The important thing to me (us) is that I'm not eating meat as in steak etc which can sit in the colon for gawd knows how long. Plus eating a (mostly :-p) vegetarian diet means that we are eating less saturated fats, cholesterol etc whilst being more creative with what we cook. (we rarely eat packaged food - only ever cook stuff from scratch...)

Chilli con carne
chicken madras
bacon sarnies
fish and chips
roast dinner

All very good reasons not to be veggie.

My missus is a veggie who eats fish. She thinks meat is murder, but fish is manslaughter due to diminished responsibility. Probably.

I've been mostly vegetarian my entire life... I'm not big on the labels, I just don't eat any meat that's not fish/seafood, and even that I could go without. I'm not terribly fond of it but we do tend to eat it a couple times a week.

If asked, for simplicity's sake, I'll say I'm 'vegetarian'.

Okay, I've decided I'm a PercyPig-arian - those little buggers have gelatin in them, but damn they're tasty.

Quorn is not good.
I decided to have some "fake sausages" (not eating red meat ) and I made them Jamie Oliver style with some thyme and apples. Just as well I did because the Quorn tasted like fresh air.
What is the point in a meat substitute??? Either you eat it or you dont.
You look real great.

Well, they're good for barbecues - either that or you're just left with salad! :P

Also, if you want to try out a recipe (that obviously uses meat), then a meat substitute tends to complete the recipe...

Finally, I've never tasted meat, so I've no idea whether it tastes like the real thing! :P

I used to be a vegetarian (not eating meat or fish - sorry but if you do, you aint!) but I went back to my carnivorous ways when I got badly anaemic during pregnancy. I'd always liked the taste of meat anyway!
Having said that I don't eat much now, maybe once or twice a week as I try to cook a varied and balanced diet for my kids. We do have a lot of fish & shellfish but the boys' favourite dinner is spinach in a creamy sauce with pasta!

I do buy Quorn burgers though. In my opinion, they're much nicer than the real meat ones!

Thanks Steve - that's pretty informative. Is it from the Vegetarian Society or something? I guess out of those I'm Lacto Vegetarian - I eat dairy products, and not eggs - except when they're part of the production process and not tasted (like cakes) - I just hate eggs!
