Good point my esteemed colleague.
Yes I would class this as a healthy cocktail.
So in relation to my imaginary hierarchy of refreshing beverages I would conclude that Jessops offer is in fact.........
..... void.
I am sorry to enforce such drastic actions upon your suggestion Jessop, but I feel in todays society we need to implement clear and decisive boundaries between what are acceptable "Refreshing Beverages" and such shams that are trying to be masqueraded as authentic smoothies by their originators should be exposed.
Once this subject has been aired more openly and true regulations are imposed upon us to safeguard recreational refreshment beverage users. Then I fear people such as Dolly and Jessop may feel the wrath of the refreshment beverage community.
I for one am considering a campaign to get proper legislation on what is and isn't classed as a SMOOTHIE.
I rest my case (for now).

Memly - You have begun an interesting debate about what doesn't make a smoothie, but have so far neglected to suggest what does.
I think my initial recipe involving strawberries and bananas is a noted classic of the smoothie-making community, which even appeared in the Smoothie Makers Annual Report 2003, written by John J Smoothie from Smoothland, Illinois.

I myself have been studying the archived important Smoothie Makers Reports myself. They certainly make for interesting reading.
Although John J Smoothie did omit some very important information IMO.
I will however admit that the smoothie you introduced to this debate sounds well crafted and could earn you a place on the infamous "Board of Smoothie Makers" if you removed the Vodka from the ingredients.
Having acquired a BA Hons in "The effects of Smoothies within modern society" I know I am qualified to inform all Smoothie cynics (and potential Smoothie converts) that Smoothies should consist of 100% fruit based liquids.
Its not yet confirmed by the BSA (British Smoothie Association), but legislation is coming into effect soon to ban all dairy products from Smoothies as this has caused many people to become confused as to what exactly the refreshment is...
Thankfully John J's perseverance to spread the word of the Smoothie was as inspired as some of todays more important inventions.
I think we all owe him our respect and indeed commitment to spreading the Smoothie revolution throughout this world.

I knew it wouldnt be long before we had a non believer...
I myself delved into the unknown last night when I made myself a milky/ice-creamy beverage, crushed ice and with some apples and grapes in it.
Not quite sure what category that fits into but I liked it all the same.
Hmm I wonder what John J would make of this.

I'm glad to make the aquaintance of another alumnus of UPF (the University of Pulped Fruits), and thanks for your response.
And I must also concur with your fruity appraisal of the contents of a classic smoothie. They should indeed consist only of mashed-up fruits and their respective juices, omitting dairy products with no question.
However, although my inclusion of Vodka went against everything John J Smoothie stood for - it was simply a recommendation on my part to enliven a standard smoothie with potato-based alcohol substances - and as such, I would argue that the the fruit/booze ratio is still balanced enough to call the creation an "Alcoholic Smoothie".
And what with even you, a dedicated scholar of muddled fruits, dancing with dairy devil this very weekend, we can begin to appreciate the ever-evolving beast that is Smoothie, and not cast judgement upon such creations.
As John J Smoothie's erstwhile partner and fellow juice connoisseur, Beverley Melons once said:
"Put that in your blender and suck it".

Now, now, willsy - whatever is decided, the beverage as described above is definitely *not* a smoothie, but a Cocktail known as a Sea Breeze. Unless of course you were stuffing entire grapefruits into your blender and pulping them up like kittens in a wet sack.Willsy wrote:Cranberry

I must admit, although I enjoyed my shake type thingy I did feel slightly wronged by the situation...

Hey now hang on a mo...i was mearly following your advice of adding vodka Jessop!!jessopjessopjessop wrote:Now, now, willsy - whatever is decided, the beverage as described above is definitely *not* a smoothie, but a Cocktail known as a Sea Breeze. Now although a sea breeze is technically not a smoothie unless real fruit is added to make it, I did actually get a little carried away yesterday in making one that is...and i cannot stress enough how much this should not be replicated by any Novice smoothie maker readers out there...
Banana's, apples, melon, cranberry juice and pineapple juice with ice and Vodka....definitely are NOT recommended together...i still have some left congealing in the fridge!!! It went solid as soon as it was mixed!!!

and tasted f*@king awful!!!!

Willsy - that sounds rough! Ahh, the perils of smoothie creation eh? I once tried to make a 'Breakfast Smoothie' - you know, cereal, natural yoghurt, honey, cinnamon - but it turned out like sour wallpaper paste and made a right mess of the blender.

Come on Stimpee...gotta read the thread dude...there is currently a debate going on as to what constitutes the make up of a smoothie, milkshake and healthy cocktail and how they differ and should not be confused with each other!stimpee wrote:ah when you star putting alcohol into it, it ceases to become a smoothie but its a cocktail. thats different.
