Top 100 Albums

The Music Discussion forum has replaced the old Lyrics and Samples forum and the Live Scene and Music Reviews forum. This forum is used to discuss anything relating to Music including Orbital topics, the live scene including Orbital gigs past, present and future. This section is an ideal place to post your live gigs reviews and album / single reviews. This forum can also be used to discuss Orbital lyrics and samples. The website will never disclose or confirm samples for legal reasons - so this is the next best thing.

Top 100 Albums

Post by memly »

As some of you might be aware, Channel 4 did ANOTHER "top 100" programme last night, 4 hours!! Don't they realize people have to work on a Monday bloody morning *yawn*
Well I really enjoyed it, although I was trying to create a wild west saloon bar in "Sims 2" at the same time   (Ok I can take any "Sad" comments anyone wants to through at me).
Anyway I am digressing, full list is here http://www.channel4.com/entertainment/t ... sults.html

but for your comfort here is the top 20...

1.RADIOHEAD - OK Computer
2.U2 - The Joshua Tree
3.NIRVANA - Nevermind
4.MICHAEL JACKSON - Thriller
5.PINK FLOYD - Dark Side of the Moon
6.OASIS - Definitely Maybe
7.THE BEATLES - Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
8.MADONNA - Like a Prayer
9.GUNS N' ROSES - Appetite For Destruction
10.THE BEATLES - Revolver
11.R.E.M. - Automatic for the People
12.THE BEATLES - The White Album
13.QUEEN - A Night at the Opera
14.COLDPLAY - Parachutes
15.OASIS - (What's the Story) Morning Glory
16.ALANIS MORISSETTE - Jagged Little Pill
17.LED ZEPPELIN - Led Zeppelin IV
18.THE VERVE - Urban Hymns
19.JIMI HENDRIX - Are you Experienced
20.THE SMITHS - The Queen Is Dead

As this is a music discussion forum, I would like to know whether people think this is a good and accurate look at the most popular albums of our time.
I know that the list is completely reliant of the demographics of the voters... that I would assume most of voters were english and there was a shortlist to start with, but then again most people who like their music could reel off a list of all time classic albums that would pretty much resemble what is in the top 50.
Anyway I must say I was surprised to see Radiohead at number 1. I must admit this is one of my all time favourite albums so I was pleased.
As for U2, I would have expected them to have come further down the list.
Very surprised that "Parachutes" got more votes than "A Rush of blood" that didnt even get into the top 100 ?????? Eh??
I have no idea why Alanis Morrissette or the Verve are in the top 20. Fair enough they were huge albums at the time, but I dont think they have aged well at all.
It was nice to see Bjorks "Debut" was in at 26. I love that album.
Just the one Kraftwerk album?
How on earth could the Libertines get a position at 50?
They are younger than me for christs sake!

Moon Safari at 58, that was a surprise. So too was "Outkast" whos Speakerboxx/The Love below got to 69, not really worthy of being in a top 100 list IMO.

Anybody care to challenge my opinions?
What are the obvious omissions? (from popular music, not YOUR favourite!)
Its strange how biggest selling albums are not necessarily the nations favourite.

Don't have cable so I missed the show. Good list, have had most of them at one time or another. But it is only The Usual Suspects.
I would have put The Bends before OK Computer and would have put Music for the Jilted Generation on the list.

Also this poll is indicative of the type of audience that watches Channel 4 of which I would be myself if I had it. :)

Other than that where is Strangeitude by Ozric Tentacles?

Hehe. Bizarre Bazaar used to be one of my favourite tunes as a teenager. I used to try and freak my friends out with it!
I would try and synchronize that gated effect with my volume control so I would get complete silence...

s'pose its better than sniffing glue, or hanging out outside Burger King!!

These lists are guaranteed to be annoying - Definitely Maybe better than any Beatles record?! Madonna?? People STILL rate Dark Side of the Moon??

Good to see The Smiths there at least, but no Roses, Prince, Stones, any dance act?

I just couldn't get over the fact that there were two Oasis albums in the Top 20  How smug do you reckon them Gallaghers are now :x

And it should've been Out of Time by REM not AFTP.

I couldn't believe that Radiohead won it, doesn't seem right really (never play my cd, although I love Karma Police).

Am I right in thinking there was no Jeff Buckley Grace in there either

No, he was no 61.
As for Dark side of the Moon, I rate it as an album, its not my favourite Floyd album, but I can see why it was so successful.

Well although I don't know 50% of the albums on the list I know that Eminem & Outkast (although I like Outkast) have no right to be on that list IMO.

By far the best one was when Robbie Williams beat Mozart in the 'most influential musician of the millennium' category.
