Personally, I think he reacted justly to what was obviously a devious and cunning ruse to provoke such a reaction from him by Materazzi. He had to have said something pretty damned offensive to have made Zizou react in such a way as to seal his fate in the game with a red card.
Italy had been playing dirty all night and there are reports that they'd been trash talking at Zidane all night and Materazzi took it several steps too far.
I think it's a shame Materazzi didn't have his nose pushed out of the other side of his head by Zidane and he was lucky it was only the sternum.

If indeed there was a "justifiable" reason for doing this he should have waited until the game was over and planted one on him out of the eye of the media & the viewers.
Yes Italy are experts of the dirty tricks but it was very cynical of Zidane to butt his chest as there would be no noticeable damage as opposed to doing him in the face, in the hope that no one would see it and there would be no evidence he had done it.
You could also argue that if he hadn't done it and France won the game it would have been the best way to get it right up Materazzi.

"Sticks and stone will break......"
As a regular player of the beautiful game the thing i have been told over the years by my managers and coach is to ignore any form of a verbal wind up no matter how offensive, you let the game go on as difficult that may be and then pay the offending player of the opposing team a visit when he leaves the ground out of sight of any officials!
edit: although upon reading what Materazzi is meant to have said about Zidane's Albanian Mum being a whore and a terrorist i can sort of understand how all that "keeping calm" and "sticks and stones" stuff would go out the window like it did in the final.

If the alleged comments from Materazzi insinuating that Zidane's mother is "a terrorist whore", he should be stripped of his winner's medal and severely penalised by FIFA for a racist comment.
Apparently, Zidane will soon tell people what Materazzi said to him. We await the statement.
IF this is what Materazzi said then I still stand by what I posted above, declaring Zidane's actions to be apprepriate.

Whatever sport you play there will be always be abuse thrown at you by the opposition in order to A: try and put you off you off your game or B: Try and get a reaction from you that may end up with you being sent off.
Zidane has been in the game long enough to know this and should be well used to it by now. It doesn't matter whether his cat, dog, mother, father, sister, wife, children or boyfriend was insulted he should have risen above the insults, stayed on the pitch and done his best to help his team try and win.
If, after the game he felt that he needed sort out his difference with Materazzi, then I'm sure he could have found an opportunity to do it without any cameras about!

I agree, apart from one thing.cheese wrote:Whatever sport you play there will be always be abuse thrown at you by the opposition in order to A: try and put you off you off your game or B: Try and get a reaction from you that may end up with you being sent off.

What he did was stupid and wrong but at least he was right to do it in full view of the world. If Matterazzi did say those things then the headbutt was the least he deserved and the rest should be public as well. Justice should always be carried out in the open, at it would be justice if he was villified by the public and FIFA, but the latter won't go that far.
The cowards.

Yeah this is true. If I earned £100,000 a week I would laugh if someone said "your mother" etc etc.cheese wrote:

For that amount of money you would've thought you could conduct yourself appropriately, especially in front of the world.
Still, I wish I could do a headbutt like that.

You look real great.
