The fact that is was mainly new stuff he played did deaden the atmos a bit, people weren't 100% sure about it. Having said that I thought the reception for the new stuff was pretty good, and the 2 old tracks he did play did get the crowd going
Btw I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Manual was very good
Mark Gardiner was ok but would have been better suited to the singer/songwriter slots in the International
Ulrich was excellent.
The jam at the end was interesting

Yeah,
It was pretty good. I think he should have taken into account that no one knew almost all the stuff he played and should have thrown in a few better known tracks.
I didn't think the venue was suited to him at all. The fact that every one was sitting down and no one was dancing (except for the 3 dudes in the front and me at the back) tended to lead to alot of chin strokery. Not too sure if i like that kind of buzz, a wee bit prentensious.
Ulrich was really getting into at times (which was cool). His stage performace is much like i'd imagine Mozart's would have been back in the day.
I loved his new stuff though. Very much the same epic, wall of sound, style of his past 2 albums...but i liked it none the less. Will definitly pick the album up.
What was the story with Mark Gardner... i hate to sound critical... but he seemed like a total mis-booking. Not that i dont like singer songwriters (i could listen to the like of Dylan, Billy Bragg and Devendra Banhart all day...because they are highly original) but my god, how depressing was he. I've seriously heard his type millions of times before. I've been to the acoustic night in the International when my friend played there... and Mark Gardiner would have fitted right in. As you know the acoustic singer songwriter thing is really big in Ireland what with Paddy Casey, Glen Hansard, Gemma Hayes, Mundy, the 2 Damiens (Rice & Dempsey), etc.... But to me, he (mark gardner) was just an off shoot of the whelans scene, which strikes me as very elitist and pretentious(hate to use that word twice-but i need it) and way over hyped. What i'm trying to say is that i thought he was shit (gardiner)and i hate whelans and it's scene with a passion. Apologies for the rant but its monday and i'm grumpy.
I saw 2 dudes there with impressive looking gimly style beards. One of them was standing at the back for a while where i was. Could that have been you??? If you were around the back near the bar, I was the lanky bald fella standing at the back beside the pillar closest to the bog. I stick out like a sore thumb ya cant miss me.
ricky

Would have to agree about Mr. Gardiner and the setting, (the acoustic guitar was really out of place), but if you ever do get to hear a Ride album you might understand the idea behind the booking. I remember seeing them at a Féile in Thurles about 15 years ago and from what I can remember (which btw is actually quite a lot, being a time before DD&D took to much of a toll)they were fucking mega, quite trippy and jangly. Oh, and their drummer was incredible.RickySteamBoat wrote:Yeah,

I thought the choice of tracks by Ulrich was reasonably brave. You could tell from the reactions to the older stuff, particularly 'On my own' that he was playing to a sold market anyway, so why not push the new stuff. IIRC he did the same the last time he was there just after 'A Strangly Isolated Place' was released. However I do agree about the chin stroking but he has attracted that sort of a crowd over here anyway, and that is the sort of crowd that would go to the Sugar Club on any other night also.
I actually like the Sugar Club as a venue. The fact that most of the punters are sitting down means no loss of high or low frequencies at the back of room, so what you heard was just as clear, if not clearer than the front. Also because of the rake to the seats you get to see a lot more too

If the guy at the back was wearing a funny looking hat, that was me

That would have been me alright

I have got loads of compliments off of muslims for wearing it (it has become a bit if a trade mark of mine), but it is actually jewish and when I tell them that their faces become quite stoney for some reason
