The good old mp3 player hunt.
My old faithful Archos player's hard drive finally bit the dust. Now I could just replace the drive, but since the unit's about six years old I thought it might be a good time to move on to something new. Something smaller, sexier & with a bit more battery life (I was getting 6-8 hours). I'd also like at least 30gigs of storage. A color screen, picture viewer & video playback would be nice but aren't necessary. Good sound matters too.
Most importantly I want a player without any bullsh!t file/operation control. It'd be really nice if it worked just like my old player, just like a removable USB HD that also plays mp3s. Plug it into any PC & transfer any files you wish. No DRM, no bs drivers or software, nothing hidden.
I've really been looking at the Ipod videos & I can get around all the Itunes bs by using RockBox. I used rockbox for years on my old player & it was GREAT!!! Though the Ipod version is still in development all word is that it's very stable with only a few bugs & the guys at rockbox have always been really good with almost daily builds & fixes.
I am also looking at the JetAudio iAudio X5 as another option. I don't really know anything about it though other than what I've found online.
I know several people here have mp3 players so I'd love to hear your opinions & advice. I'm also in a bit of a hurry since I'm going to Phoenix on the 27th & I'd really like to have a player for the flights.
Thanks.

I have the 30gb iPod too. It rocks, but I don't know nearly as much as you guys about technology 'n' stuff.

Alright, I'm a member of the 30gb iPod club, but mine's just a photo, not one of the video ones. I'm more than pleased with the battery life, and since I have iTunes managing all of my music anyway it's ever so very seamless and awesome. Because I use a Mac, the last.fm plugin even tracks and counts songs that I play on the iPod. The only regret I have is that I thought of all kinds of things to engrave on the back of it after I'd ordered.
