Amsterdam Coffee Shops

Post by memly »

Is it true that the law has changed in Clogland so that only the Dutch can purchase spliff?

Or is this a paranoid dilusion I'm suffering?

If this is true could one of you lovely cloggies give me a crash course in Dutch?

If anyone has any info. I'll be glad to know some more.

why is your title "Amsterdam Coffee Shops?"

those shops surround us everywhere!
we can't even walk for like 100 feet without seeing one

well, that's not the truth, but ok.

anyway, i haven't heard anything about that law.

There was talk of a smoking ban in Holland, such as the ones in effect out in California, Ireland etc. I think they realised how much the economy would be buggered once the British louts stopped going over to get spliffed up etc.

Anyway, after a few nice things to smoke, everyone sounds Dutch ;)

well, we can't smoke at public places (libraries. workplaces, stuff like that) and in the train etc. anymore.
but we can still smoke at home and in bars.

and to quote eddy izzard:

So yes, and we do have slight differences in that arena, but in Europe we have 200 languages. 200 languages! Just count them, I know you won’t! And future generations of Europeans – I’m sorry, Europeans, but we’re gonna have to be bilingual; we’re gonna have to be, and English speakers hate this!

“Two languages in one head? No one can live at that speed! Good Lord, man! You’re asking the impossible!”

“But the Dutch speak four languages and smoke marijuana…”

“Yes, but they’re cheating! Everyone knows marijuana is a drug enhancement that can help you on track and field to come last in a team of 8 million other runners… who are all dead.”

Hmmm strange. I heard from two separate sources that the law had changed.. ones an ex-fireman, the other a close mate.

I think it would be a shame if its true, but likely because of the reputation us British have when we are abroad.

*smug mode*
Anyway I qualify as Bilingual too, having attended a Spanish school for 4 years makes you learn the language fairly quickly.

An item I heard about was in relation to the amount they can carry and the amount they can sell.
Seemingly they can only sell you 5 grams at a time but they are also only allowed to carry 25 grams in total in the shop at any one time.
The last bit means that it is completely unviable to run a shop unless you break the law. This is so if the city councils actually decide to shut down a shop they have a ready made excuse. It seems a bit much but it is easier for them to do it this way than through health and safety as all this requires is a raid by the law, rather than an inspection and then a court order.

There was talk of a law that would prohibit foreigners from buying spliff at a coffee shop. I remember teasing my UK friends with it. Imagine the person behind the counter going: ''passport please?''

Anyway ... first time I heard about it was two years ago and there is still no law.

The only selling to Dutch people was a proposal made in parliament that never went anywhere.

Also, coffeshops as far as I know can stock 500g not 25g and there is currently discussion in parliament to legalize the growing of marijuana so that the coffeshops can be 100% legal.

hope that clears things up.
