SPOILER ALERT: Melbourne set

The Music Discussion forum has replaced the old Lyrics and Samples forum and the Live Scene and Music Reviews forum. This forum is used to discuss anything relating to Music including Orbital topics, the live scene including Orbital gigs past, present and future. This section is an ideal place to post your live gigs reviews and album / single reviews. This forum can also be used to discuss Orbital lyrics and samples. The website will never disclose or confirm samples for legal reasons - so this is the next best thing.

SPOILER ALERT: Melbourne set

Post by Badger »

There's not really a spoiler as such: set list is the same as from the solo shows from the end of last year:

Out There Somewhere (Part 1)
The Moebius
Out There Somewhere (Part 2)
Lush 3/Eurotunnel
Impact
Remind

-technical issue with a 10-15min break-

Satan (minus the new samples which was a shame but think it might've been because of the tecnical issue)
Belfast
Chime
Crime
Know Where To Run
Halcyon
One Perfect Sunrise

-Encore-

The Box
Doctor ?

The venue was really good, a low ceiling and a fantastic club vibe. Only around about 1000 people there.
Sound was really good if you stood back from the front, but the bass was quite badly distorted if you were down at the front which was a bit of a disappointment. I stayed at the front until Impact where it got too distorted for me and then went and stood back a bit, which was a great move as sound was 10 times better and I got a great view of the stage and the massive LED screens.

Out There Somewhere started with a sample "What's wrong?" before the opening drone started and sounded great but when The Moebius dropped it really rocked and I went a bit bonkers during this as it was the first time I've heard this live (not just on the live USB's).
Lush again blew me away and I absolutely love how the end section is so different every night.
A few problems looked like they were happening as several times during Impact and Remind we had extended sections of beats and several times several other people came on stage to fiddle with leads and buttons.
After Remind finished they stopped the set and apologised saying they had a technical issue they needed to fix before they could carry on. Took about 10 to 15 mins to fix and again apologised and said that it would be worth the wait before we got going again.

Satan started without the new samples, which is a shame as I love them, but think that must've been due to the equipment problems and I think the guys just wanted to get the show moving again. Was great watching the visuals for Satan properly again. Belfast came on and the cheer and hands that went up was beautiful. Lights came up and was a great moment but when Chime morphed out of the new slow intro it has the place went nuts. I don't think I've ever seen so many Australians smiling so hard ever!
Crime cut in and I had a of people asking me what Green album track this was, so obvouisly I corrected them but loved it and when the sample breakdown happened I saw a lot of recognition on peoples faces and the smiles got bigger.

Know Where To Run had some fantastic 'ommph' to it and we had an extended end with the beats rolling along for ages whilst Halcyon came in very quietly at first and then dropped in. When Belinda and Bon Jovi came in you could actually hear the whole crowd singing, was brilliant. Really growing to love that new ending and the Melbourne gig had loads of new structure to it, BUT I wish they'd bring back the proper Halcyon beats again near the end , over the top of the new section (like the Glasgow USB) as I think that brings the track full circle and sounds great.

I must admit One Perfect Sunrise got a fantastic reception from the Australian audience (and I do love it too but I think this is one in the future that could get removed from the set) and on the inthemix forums a lot of people were hoping to hear it and it did do all the right things with the lights coming up and hands in the air.

There was huge noise to get Orbital back on stage once they left after OPS and The Box came on but I think there wasn't as much of the vocal samples which was a shame and the extended crossover into Doctor ? was also missing a lot of the vocal sample which again was a shame but when it kicked in everyone in the venue was bouncing up and down like demented Time Lords.

Was a great opening night with just a few technical issues and a little bit of a sound problem (I hope the bass isn't distorted at the front in Sydney as that's probably where i'll be for the whole set) and the crowd was great, but it was still weird being at the gig by myself, although I did talk to a few people a lot of them were well on their way to being really frazzled.

Wierd seeing them use an LED screen instead of the normal projectors. Certainly a brighter clearer image, but less versatile (and much less subtle!) than the old school method. I imagine they didn't want to drag huge HD projectors around small clubs in Oz.

Not really. The projectors themselves aren't really all that big tbh. It depends on the type of LED used of course but for transportability and speed of set up there is generally no real difference. What it does make a difference to is just the amount of gear on stage. On a club stage space would be at a premium so anything you can take off is a bonus.

Liking the screens. Sometimes the visuals become lost in the old setup. Looks good on the videos anyway...be interesting to see it in the flesh.
