Is it just me..

The Music Discussion forum has replaced the old Lyrics and Samples forum and the Live Scene and Music Reviews forum. This forum is used to discuss anything relating to Music including Orbital topics, the live scene including Orbital gigs past, present and future. This section is an ideal place to post your live gigs reviews and album / single reviews. This forum can also be used to discuss Orbital lyrics and samples. The website will never disclose or confirm samples for legal reasons - so this is the next best thing.

Is it just me..

Post by III »

..or are there very few women in electronica?

I know there are lots of tracks with female vocal collaborations, but are there actually any bands with girls behind the synths?

I can't think of any myself.

There are a few theories floating behind the reasons for this.

1) The very fact that large chunks of technology are involved has a tendency to scare off women and attract boys. There is a certain nerdish quality to all that gadgetry.
I would have to agree. Just look at the demographic on this site alone.

2) The music industry is populated by a load of misogynistic wankers keeping down what women want to get into it.
I would have thought that as electronica is a little more underground, it has a slightly more egalitarian streak than the mainstream.

3) The shoegazing quality there is about most electronica is a much more male thing than female.
Again I would have to agree. This is also the reason my wife finds most compelling. She really does not like what I listen to.

Valarie Trebeljar (lali puna), Roisin Murphy (Moloko) and Nina Hynes are 3 exceptions to the rule I can think of.

Rebuttals, counter-arguments and theories greatly appreciated :)

Btw when did Kemistry die? :( :( :(
