I watched this last night after not having seen it in about a year.
I thought I had understood the general direction of the film but by the time it finished I was a bit confused.
It is a brilliant film, superb acting, great soundtrack, very dark etc.
I understood most of the time travelling theory that Roberta Sparrow mentioned in the book.
I just didnt understand how Donnie ended up going back in time when it was the plane that entered the wormhole...
Can anyone who is brighter than myself and has seen the film clarify the finale for me please.
Mem "thick" ly.

yes well.
i think it was magic.
I'm not sure if he really went back in time. or that it was some sort of parallel universe thing.
As the next thing is him lying in bed and NOT getting out before the engine fell.
sort-ish.
i dunno.
i have the poster anyway.

You need to talk to my brother about this.
He knows all the theories of Donnie Darko. At the time the film came out there was a great website with all sorts of secret pages and stuff you could do to get more stuff like the entire printed book by Roberta Sparrow
ooh I found it (wasn't hard!)

But yeah I think Tim has the drift. I think Donnie was in a parallel universe. He went back in time to the normal universe (before they split) where he was in bed when the engine fell.
To be honest I don't think you're supposed to get it all totally!

I believe the Directors cut of the movie has more explaining scenes.
And also watch the film with comments. he explains a lot.
Still i think most of the fun is thinking it out for yourself and give it your own answer.

Well that cleared things up....
What the hell does all that mean?
The film centres around time travel, I don't recall any mention of parallel universes. Are we supposed to ( sorry about the pun ) make that jump ourselves?
Surely the underlying fabric of parallel universes is that every choice that is made creates a new strand so both decisions are acted out.
This would mean that all that happened at the end of the film was that we got a glimpse of the universe where Donnie didnt decide to go out for a stroll...
Wheres Stephen Hawkins when you need him?

He travels both in time AND between parallel universes.
The film is indeed rather vague in its explanation of events, which is its greatest strength...
The Director's Cut edition is more explicit, and therefore a weaker. There is no room for ambiguity and less for your imagination to latch onto. Trust me, it's better not knowing. Enjoy the confusion!
