the PLA wrote:My uncle was a guard there when that happened, he had to do some of the clean up afterwords too. He has some very gruesome tales to tell about that. Those 'men' did truly horrible things to anyone & everyone they didn't like.
It happened the year after I moved to Rio Rancho New Mexico, about 45 minutes from Sante Fe.
The PLA: Woooahhhh, thats very heavy stuff. I'm sure your uncle has a story or two to tell from that place. The stuff i've been reading about it have been really shocking. All the shit you know that goes on in prisons all ready but just 100 times more f*cked up and crazy.

Just finished 'The Algebreist'. Once I got into it, it rocked on at a good pace but was still heavy going. V. interesting premise though.
Currently reading 'Genome' by Matt Ridley. Thoughtful Popular Science.

yea, Gibson is cool, although it's true that especially his books from the 80's and early 90's oscillate today between "futuristic" and "nostalgic". Time turns sci-fi into a parody of itself.
That said, I enjoyed Pattern Recognition very much, more than Neuromancer in fact.
I recommend Mark Neal's year 2000 take on Gibson, in "No Maps For These Territories":

oh, and kvagga, I'm sorry that we didn't get to meet in Helsinki, I've been living in a complete internet blackout for the whole course of June!
I don't know how well it went. I have my doubts!
Let me know if you get in, OK?
btw, you're two years my junior, I think, since I have one year in philology behind me and before that I had my year off. If you get a year's break, DO go somewhere abroad or at least do something fun, because there's no point just doing something silly like just working.

When I find the time I dive back into Haruki Murakami's "Wind-up Bird Chronicle" and as a side dish I am going through the works of Italo Calvino (that's the plan with Murakami too though although this is just my 2nd novel from him).

Are you liking it?
Where do you plan to go?
I had a plan sketched out but something's changed here... hope to still make it happen.

Not too sure at the moment, the book is giving me loads of great ideas though.
SE Asia, India, Fiji, Oz, New Zealand and parts of South America...all appeal to me at the moment!
The main dilemma i am having is just saying to myself yes i am gonna jack my career in and set a target date to go!
Such a big decision....very exciting!
How about you...which places did you think of visiting?
(i may start a thread up about this!)

Oh, I know.
I don't want to reveal my plan just yet... It's in a bit of a state of flux.
