I'm just making a point that throwing in my friend needs a liver doner doesnt make your bad comments ok in a tribute thread. I aint posting a lot of negative comments towards him.

Again this was reference to "he got a minute silence". You or I achieve what he did then we will get a minute silence. He never cured Aids but he was a great footballer. Probably one of the best the UK has seen. I have no idea what you have done in your life, i havent spoken or seen you in many many years (i dont even know what you have done for probably the last 3/4 years!) but as far as i am aware you are not a great footballer. He deserves that minute silence - people will remember him for 100s of years. To be honest the whole country was expecting an onslaught of disrespectfull comments from Leeds and Liverpool supporters because sometimes football is taken way too seriously. There was only a small minority who spoilt it.

As i said, I would if i wanted. I dont need your permission Pooka. People are always disagreeing with each other here. I think you have some idea that people get banned if they disagree with me. One person has been banned on this forum for posting casino ads and on the old board i banned someone for bloody Dollydagger! Again no skin of my nose... People disagree with me all the time. On here, in real life - not bothered. We all have different views and I wouldnt have it any other way.

Although I agree with Loopz that this thread was probably not an appropriate forum for it, there IS a national debate about whether Best was a suitable role model and deserving of the Princess Di treatment or just a pisshead who threw away his football career and many personal relationships.

So here's my opinion...

I'm not an alcoholic so I have not much of an idea about what it must be like to stop drinking BUT I am trying (again) to stop smoking - if stopping the drink is anything like as hard, then I can empathise with him.

A lot of people (including me) drink far too much but only a small minority are cursed with the alcoholic gene, and even fewer as publicly as Best. Alcoholism is a desease and in this day and age shouldn't carry a huge stigma with it, regardless of how big an arsehole you turn into when pissed.

It seems to me that he was much loved by his family and friends, despite his bad behaviour, which suggests that he was actually a good person.

And as for his womanising, well, most, if not all, blokes would have done exactly the same as him given half a chance. That's men for you.

In my opinion he was neither a saint nor a sinner but he was a great footballer who gave pleasure to millions and a 60s icon who deserves all the attention he got over the weekend.

I'll shut up now.
