The new Dollboy stuff on their website is lovely...especially 'Cicadas'. Really hope they're playing the Big Chill again this year....

Quinoline Yellow

Trom:
I received Quinoline Yellow's 'Dol Guy Assist' in the post yesterday.
F*ckin brilliant. I am totally loving it.
It reminds me a bit of 'Anvil Vapre' era Autechre (which is my favourite autechre sound) except a wee bit more melodic.
Some nice screwed beats without it being irritatingling noisy, pretentiously complex, or ripoff Aphexy.
Plus I love the production on it. QY's label mate Bola (by comparison) tends to release overly produced, polished material (which i'm not really into- cause i reckon it tends to sound a bit cheesy).
The sound on this album (to me) sounds very raw and dirty and thats just the way i like my albums to sound.

IS THERE ANYMORE QUINOLINE YELLOW RELEASES AVAILABLE THAT I MIGHT BE INTO??????????????

for my money, QY's best ever track is Ethyl Maltol, only released on a neo ouja compilation called cottage industries 1 or 2 but he alwys plays it live his live sets are devastating!! ... Skam have most of his other stuff, Cyriack Parasol ep, LMW motors and i think there's some mp3s on his website uchelfa.net

Sorry trom,
only spotted your mail now.

I reckon the stand out tracks are
1: Sealed i love the minimalist melody flowing through it
5: Off Ground Touch reminds me of being on a building site(in a good way) for some strange reason....i know i'm a bit weird
7: Tuppence Sword Its brilliant....i love the hook that starts off the tune and then pretty much carries it
8: Lidding Stock This is very very Anvil vapre- era autechre-ish i like alot
11: Dulcis Forgot the reason i like this....but does it matter. Its a great tune god damn it!!!

why oh why do we have a forum chock-ablock with autechre heads but judging by posts no body seems to have been hooked by the QY sound ??

trom,
also
I picked up digitonal's "23 things fall apart". Its tricky enough to get hold of over here but managed it none the less.
I have to say what a bloody fantastic album. Absolutly Gorgeous!!!! I dont think electronic music can get any more lush with out it verging on ambient.
Sooooo....with the sucess of that I had to pick up "centre cannot hold"ep. Which is also bloody fantastic. I especially love the Kirsty hawkshaw vocals. Obviously reminds me of Halcyon.
But all in all i'm very impressed......it begs the question though, why do more people (on here maybe) not give them a go (foolish people)???

by the way....keep the suggestions coming as you see fit.

Ricky

Rach and I went and saw Digitonal's rescoring of Kubrick's The Shining a few weeks ago. It was shortened to an hour and 10 minutes, featuring all the key parts of the film. Black Box was dropped in at the end of the film, which was the perfect ending to a totally awesome new soundtrack to this film. :D

Really hope that this will be available on DVD at some point as everyone should see it.

Just to add to this.....

Ricky - I agree that more people should check out Digitonal - I don't think they'll be disappointed! Cantus V and Black Box (my favourite tracks) are definitely worth a listen! :)

Let's just hope he does more stuff, and more live dates!!

On your recommendation i got hold of an AI 2005 Label Sampler. Again, i'm very impressed.
Claro Intelecto, Montag and Subside are the artists on this compilation with the standout tracks IMO. Now I have to start checking out individual albums by these guys.

Cheers for the heads up on this label....me likey very much.

By the way, anything else you might think of (thats quality like the stuff in the previous posts) post it here and i'll definitly check it out. THAT GOES FOR EVERYONE ELSE TOO!!!!!

Oh, and i listened to some HP Stonji mp3's on the spezial material website. Very interesting, i'll get round to those guys very soon.

Here's my two forints...

Ai - wise, I think all Claro Intellecto's records worth checking out - esp Section... a lot of the Ai compilations are really high quality too and there are a few of them - New Town and Leisure. are very strong...

Lots of their artists produce very chilled downbeat electronica and I've even heard it described as folktronica  With the exceptions of FZV (dark breakbeat dnb/electro) and ADJ (melodic electro)

Most of the others are much more downbeat, Normal: World Fuels is really beautiful, melancholic... Montag is similar, Yellotone a bit to laid back and plinky plonky analogue for my musical palette
:D

Hmm, IMO I thought Yellotone was the best of a very good lot. Indeed his album 'Tar file junction' was my album of the year last year :D

Also check out Ralph Myerz and the Jack Herren band's new album 'Your new best friends'.
