Paul and Phil's work in Orbital

The Music Discussion forum has replaced the old Lyrics and Samples forum and the Live Scene and Music Reviews forum. This forum is used to discuss anything relating to Music including Orbital topics, the live scene including Orbital gigs past, present and future. This section is an ideal place to post your live gigs reviews and album / single reviews. This forum can also be used to discuss Orbital lyrics and samples. The website will never disclose or confirm samples for legal reasons - so this is the next best thing.

Paul and Phil's work in Orbital

Post by darkorb »

So I read a post from someone in another forum, who had read a peculiar Orbital interview, who stated "that the main composer had always been Paul and Phil did mainly the sound quality and all those technical things..

Is this really true? Comparing Paul's solo work to Long Range always gave me the impression that he was behind most of the melodies and harmonics, while Phil was behind the beatwork.

Any opinions on this?

Paul did all the work and phil just got him tea and biscuits.

It's 106 miles to Chicago.
We got a full tank of gas,
half a pack of cigarettes.
It's dark and we are wearing sunglasses

Think you are refering to one of my old posts - I recall that this came from the centre page interview they gave Ted Kessler in the NME when The Saint was out (the photo shoot was a Saint/MI style thing where they were tied up on chairs?).

To be honest mate, I think you've kind of answered your own question with the statement about how their solo works compare to the Orbital sound, but I'm sure that we would all be surprised if we found out who did what on each track!

Old quote from an article I'd never seen before about the live performances - this probably would be the same in the studio?

''I do the arranging and Phil does the mixing,'' Paul Hartnoll said, ''and we both share the synthesizer manipulation. We don't have to adhere to any set structure, so it's different every night.''
