'Tis a drawback of written communication. Unless the reader is aware of the writer's intent, the tone of the words can be lost. I once read an Iris Murdoch book (The Philosophers' Pupil) that I regarded a dreary slog with no life to a story that was going absolutly nowhere. My wife read it and spent most of her time rolling around the floor with laughter. It was the first (and so far only) Iris Murdoch book I had read. Herself had read a few before that so she knew what to expect.
