AQUASKY & LONGRANGE - CROSSWIRE - REMIX CONTEST

The Music Discussion forum has replaced the old Lyrics and Samples forum and the Live Scene and Music Reviews forum. This forum is used to discuss anything relating to Music including Orbital topics, the live scene including Orbital gigs past, present and future. This section is an ideal place to post your live gigs reviews and album / single reviews. This forum can also be used to discuss Orbital lyrics and samples. The website will never disclose or confirm samples for legal reasons - so this is the next best thing.

Loopz: alrighty then, IT Magician, I take your word for it... ;)

Here's a yousendit link to my remix of Crosswire, available only for limited downloads (so they say):

http://s21.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2U5C ... YK36XR8MQ3

This version is not the same I sent to the contest, as I've had time to affect some chances. It's a whopping 11 minutes long, but I hope there is sufficient progression to keep it interesting all the way.

Maybe not to everybody's taste, but IDM/electro/noise-heads should take a whiff. 8)

Anybody else willing to share their creations at this point?

(btw, Dogs, this version is slightly different from the version I sent you earlier...)

Go on then...

Here's my take on 'Crosswire'.

Samples from the original, additional strings, 303 and arrangement by me.

*seeing as the BBCode is arsing around, you'll need to cut and paste that URL into another browser window or tab.

well, you sure did something else. and i like the beginning. nice and dark.

but why the amen break again? isn't that thing getting a bit old now? it could use something with a bit more bite. :D

"why the amen break again?"
Glad you noticed!

In fact, people should know I never sample drum loops - except when remixing, of course...

But since I got that amen thing lying around, I figured that EVERY electronic musician must use that rotten loop ONCE in their lifetime (preferrably no more than that). And so, since I've already made 5 albums worth of tracks without delving into the amen territory, I decided to get it over and done with. Now, you see, I won't have to go down that road ever again! :)

Squarepusher and others have effectively deconstructed the piece in the past, so it's really just a pastiche type presence these days.

Anyway, it's not meant to be convincing as much as an obvious wink. It's also a kind of stab at the predictable nature of the whole genre of breakbeat. Just listen to any number of "new" artists.

Crosswire itself has been created in that mold to accompany any number of overused and trite breaks, I'm sorry to say. The fact is that amen is still the "unmentionable" backbone of a lot of breakbeat. Amen is the unconscious of the industry.

Am I blowing your mind or what? ;)

Btw, I find it interesting that both Dog and I decided to use some sort of melancholy string progression in the background... Maybe that's exactly what the original was lacking?

Melancholy? My strings aren't melancholy! ;)

As for using the 'Amen' loop... You could've found a better quality sample.

No offence Otto, but I found myself very bored with this mix at about the 4 minute mark, basically as there's not enough progression in there for my tastes.

just wondering...
but i fully support your reply. :D

and not that there's anything wrong with the amen break. it got pretty far as a b side of a 1 hit wonder :P, it's just that it's used almost everywhere, as you said.

Amen andrews is cool, nonetheless

In case people haven't seen this, here is a pretty neat video summary of the whole amen brother phenomenon:

(it also touches on the copyright issue, which is another important area)
