Star Trek: The Next Generation and Orbital

The Music Discussion forum has replaced the old Lyrics and Samples forum and the Live Scene and Music Reviews forum. This forum is used to discuss anything relating to Music including Orbital topics, the live scene including Orbital gigs past, present and future. This section is an ideal place to post your live gigs reviews and album / single reviews. This forum can also be used to discuss Orbital lyrics and samples. The website will never disclose or confirm samples for legal reasons - so this is the next best thing.

Star Trek: The Next Generation and Orbital

Post by Orbitalhound »

I'm sure that I am not the first person to pick up on this, but I have noticed names of Orbital songs that relate specifically to Star Trek the Next Generation. Such as "Nothing Left [Shizoid Man Remix]" Schizoid Man is the name of an episode. "Macro Head" on the green album is a quote from the character Q. The Alchemy "Phasers on Stun Mix" is also an obvious indication. There are other indications besides song titles, but I cannot discuss them here.

It would seem to be a reasonable theory that Orbital likes/liked Star Trek.

a twist in the fabric of space,

please don't make me mentally connect orbital too much to star trek :(
;)

i think you would be allowed to discuss them here, if you're talking about samples and stuff, it's just that they couldn't be officially confirmed by anybody, 'cos that might incriminate orbital, but if it's just you posting wild speculation ;) then no harm done...

:Finger 2 Dave. If you read what it says in the forum section then its quite clear where we stand on samples

Schizoid Man is an alternative artist name for Schematix and Schematix is Phil Holmberg. So its not Orbital that decided on that mix name but i'm sure Mr Holmberg is probably a trekkie as well :)

You're sure he's probably a trekkie? Definitely maybe, I'll say.

But come on, who ISN'T a trekkie?

I'm not :)

I know Phil likes his old sci-fi so maybe he just prefers the old star trek stuff.

Orbital aren't the only band to sample 'Star Trek'... Information Society did it on 'Whats On Your Mind (Pure Energy)'.

Come to think of it, Orbital collaborated on 'Way Out' with Brother Sun/Sister Moon aka Hummingbirds and one half of Hummingbirds is Paul Robb who used to be in Information Society.

It's a conspiracy ;)

Another fascinating Star Trek sample for you all: There's a noise in that first tune on the Brown album that's from the original series episode with Kahn in it. It's the noise that some laser button makes when Kirk presses it. At least, I think it's the episode with Kahn in it. I've only watched about three of them, so it's probably that one.

Stop press: Orbital in nerd shocker! :P

The Leonard Nimoy sample from The Information Society tune was only cleared by him for use when his son Adam told him he was a friend of the band....

i know its only speculative but don't you think we shouldn't speculate too much as to the source of probably uncleared samples?
