Transformers : The Movie * SPOILERS*
Dunno if you guys have seen these - or even care, but here are a few leaked designs and on set pics of some of the characters from the upcoming Transformers movie...and they're bloody awful!
I KNOW it's a kids movie based on TOYS from nigh on twenty years ago, but it somehow feels like Michael bay just put his willy up my childhood... Shockingly bad.

I'm really looking forward to this movie. I'm too old to take it personally that they don't look like the toys from 25 years ago, so I'm just up for another rip-roaring Michael Bay piece of overblown eye-bursting nonsense. Bad Boys II is a work of genius.

I don't doubt that the movie will be entertaining - I just think it's completely unforgivable for a film with such a wealth of graphic source material to have such poor production design - we are going to spend most of the 2 hr running time looking at the things after all!
If you're going down the perilous route of re-designing characters that have been represented hundreds of times across most forms of media during the last 20 years, you REALLY should have something to show for it. Thousands of dollars and months of pre-production and this is the best they could come up with? The Citroen advert with the dancing robot looks more convincing!
It's a bit like deciding that Indiana Jones needs something ' a bit more sports casual '.

The director of the Citroen ad is directing the Halo movie.
It's daft to get all upset over development sketches. You haven't seen them move yet, and that's what's important in movies. They look like Michael Bay's typical production designs (see that buggy they drive around the asteroid in Armageddon), and look a lot more practical than giant clunky versions of the toys (remember that in the cartoons the characters are a lot more mobile than the blocky, awkward toys themselves, and they obviously want to go for believable mobility in the movie).
Anyhow, if it's even 1/3 as entertaining as Bad Boys II I'll love it.

I think the new designs are fantastic. The reason the Transformers looked like chunky children's toys in the 80s was because they were chunky children's toys in the 80s. Twenty years on and they are getting a dark and sinister make-over, much more appropriate to their origins as robotic alien life-forms.
