Mems World Tour 2006/7

Post by memly »

Well as I've hinted in previous posts, I'm going travelling from September through to January.

I know a quite a few of you are well travelled and I will be joining the throng of the smelly no good herb consuming dreadlocked surfy types known to the layman as a "backpacker"

My travels will take in India/Malaysia/Thailand/Cambodia/Vietnam/Australia and Raratonga which is some remote pacific Island where I hope to bump into Jack, Hurley, Sawyer and especially Kate (Loopz I will pay my respects).

I have not really planned a route as such, but I have a rough idea what I want to do.
If anyone has been to these locations and has any suggestions of remarkable places then let me know.

Or if any of you who live in far flung destinations fancy hooking up for a few drinks and a chin wag then please let me know...

Uncle Travelling Mem

Only place in your list I've been to is Oz. If you end up on the east coast, Sydney is great, but if you get a chance, make an effort to get to a place called Bellingen. It's not far from Byron Bay (which is backpacker central!) and is a sleepy little village. We spent 3 days at the wonderful hostel there, and ended up dong virtually nothing, just lazing in hammocks and saying stuff like 'we should really go and do that rainforest walk...maybe tomorrow'.

(However, I can recommend the walk, organised by one of the hostel workers, really fascinating, and shows off the diversity of the ecology out there - one side of a hill is desert conditions, the other side is rainforest, and it ends up with a swim in a lake with a waterfall - swimming under the waterfall is one of my most vivid memories...)
Bellingen is also the home of David whatshisname, the pianist depicted in 'Shine'.

wherever you end up, have a good one - are you going to the Big Chill before you leave?

No not this year

Saving every penny...

My ex went off travelling when we split up; she was meant to travel around Oz, within a few days she found Byron Bay and spent the following year there!

I'm sure I'll visit that area.

Mems World? Isn't that a popular 'jazz magazine'... :D

I was going to recommend loads of places to go in Oz, but looking at your itinery you've got your work cut out!

Would recommend a jaunt up (and down) the WEST coast from Perth. Far fewer people seem to do it and it kicks the arse off the east, as long as you don't mind LONG car journeys through the middle of nowhere and suicidal Kangaroos hurling themselves at your car after dark!

Ningaloo Reef off the upper west coast is amazing and never more than 50 yards off shore (Barrier Reef - 2 MILES off shore!)

There's a place up there called Coral Bay where the reef is right at your feet as you step into the surf. It was a protected sight for 20 years and when i went 3 years ago had NO development at all (literally just a beach!) but the Oz Government recently granted permission to build a Hilton Hotel there, so go quick before it's completely f**king ruined! http://www.save-ningaloo.org/

I havent been to the other places on your list (Sniff!) Have Fun!

I've only been to Goa in India and Phuket/PhiPhi/Krabi/Phang Nga in Thailand from the countries you intend to visit, and those are the tourist centers of both countries which in my understanding many backpackers tend to avoid. Still if you end up in either, there's a lot to see and do. I especially know about the areas in Thailand since I've been to Phuket for at least five times already. One thing I recommend the most from seeing the list of countries you're going to: Scuba-dive! If you haven't done the course yet, do it in for example Thailand and you won't regret it. I've done diving in a lot of places around the area and would especially recommend the area around PhiPhi islands. Managed to see sharks, turtles, sepias, pufferfish, lionfish, etc there. I've heard that the tsunami hasn't really hurt the reefs either...

Another activity that offers some stunning views, is the kayak/canoe(/what ever you call those things) rides in Phang Nga area. There'll be a guy paddling the kayak to magnificent lagoons and at least one long cave full of bats. The whole area in itself is worth seeing from the sea, with it's amazing high tropical islands (familiar from an old Bond movie) sticking out from the sea. Very "touristy", but that shouldn't put you off doing it if you get the chance... :)

You can also just browse around the brochuredesks in the bigger tourist cities (like Patong in Phuket) for a ton of cool activities to choose from yourself.

I'd also like to say that I'm still incredibly jealous and that's exactly the kind of trip I'm intending to do sometime in the (hopefully near) future, when I get the chance. :P

Hi Memly,

I've only been to India of the places you're going, and went to Dehli, Agra, Goa and Kerala - would recommend all of them, though I didn't have too much time in any other than Goa (new years madness and found it hard to leave).

One thing - be careful buying train tickets - I forgot my lonely planet before leaving, and got scammed in Dehli by the first one in the book "No, the ticket office has moved, come with me...." ended up paying 4 times the price, though the trains are great and we still got a 36 hour trip from Dehli to Goa for less than it costs me to get to London... though it proved to be the only useful thing the Lonely Planet provided, definitely get another guide, found it inaccurate and generally useless in most cases and places.

Goa and Kerala are lovely, if you can, try out a houseboat trip on the Keralan backwaters, fairly expensive, but we met up with some people to do it with, lovely relaxing few days.

The others I travelled with went on for another few months after I had to come home, and general consensus among all was that Varanassi is unmissable, stunning and the highlight of their time in India.

When in Sydney, go to Newtown and get really drunk. That's what I did for three years. It was great.
