I
spend a lot of time on various message boards and i noticed a
brilliant idea run by Nacmat and Wooferattack.
So i stole the idea from them but of course i made sure they knew
about it.
The idea is as below
A list is produced which will contain IDM/Electronica etc artists/groups/people.
Originally i had 76 in my list so the first task was for everyone
to browse the list and suggest any others that are not on there.
We discussed whether we should include Orbital and after a mixed
response we stuck them in. Whether they still in next year is
another question.
When
the agreed qualification list was complete (It grew to 135 enteries!)
we started the qualification round. Everyone was entitled to vote
for their top 10 once and once only. There was an agreed cut-off
date and the points was then counted. 10 points for 1st team in
list, 9 points for 2nd team in list and so on.
The
top 32 artists was then drawn from a virtual hat and placed into
8 groups of 4. The 2nd stage of voting then began.
Everyone
then voted on which two artists/groups from each group should
qualify for the next round.
16 artists were then left and they were drawn out of the virtual
hat to compete in a knockout competition. The third stage of voting
then began.
Within
time the knockout stage went through each round from Knockout
Round 1, Quarter Finals, Semi Finals and then the ultimate Final.
The idea was pitched on the 21st March 2003 and the final was
announced on May 3rd 2003. There were some interesting discussions
inbetween the voting and quite a bit of banter (which we like!).
Its impossible to document everything that was posted as there
were over 500 posts but we have documented the results.
We intend this to be a yearly event...if we are still online and
alive that is :)

Orbital took the title quite easily and had the 2nd (yes...not
1st) highest score in the whole round. 2nd place was contended
closely by HIA and Lemon Jelly. Arovane scored quite well but
didnt really leave the bottom.
1st : Orbital 25
2nd : Lemon Jelly 14
3rd : HIA 10
4th : Arovane 7
Winners : Orbital and Lemon Jelly

Autechre also p***ed on the other members of this group but winning
only as the 7th highest voted artist. Jega and 808 State gave
Meat Beat Manifesto a good run but ended up losing out. Jega was
in third place with one point difference over 808 State.

Two clear winners in this Group. Hexstatic took third from Global
Communications. Both scored well but Boards of Canada just about
beat Kraftwerk to win Group C.

Plaid scored the third highest out of the Group stages but was
the group with the highest difference between 1st and 2nd. There
was a battle of all battles for 2nd place - Bent lost out by one
point and ended bottom of the group. Gescom and Sabres of Paradise
both had equal scores. The tie break was the score for the Qualifying
rounds which meant Gescom got 2nd place with one single point.
I can see that decision ending in tears :)

Aphex Twin totally shined and scored the highest of the round.
No competition whatsoever. Eat Static got a few votes but nothing
worth talking about. u-ziq was always a couple of votes ahead
of Brothomstates.

Underworld had a comfortable win but second place ended up being
a battle between the old and the new. KLF historic sillyness was
enough to earn 2nd place from Amon Tobin. Royksopp had a very
disappointing round.

The Orb proved too much for the other three. Again this was a
comfortable win. Spooky nearly created an upset but just got pipped
by the other old timers Fluke. Sasha got the joint worst score
in the round.

This was the group which involved the most contended 1st and 2nd
place. FSOL and Bola had their own private battle and both scored
very high (FSOL - joint 3rd and Bola joint 7th). FSOL finally
pushed Bola aside as Nightmare on Wax got third and Ovuca/Astrobotnia
was bottom with the joint worst score in the round.
